About us

At the end of the Second World War, the Universal Engraving and Colorplate Company in Buffalo (New York State, USA) founded the Engineers Specialties Division (ESD). Its mission was to support the measuring projector industry, which was then in its infancy. ESD began by manufacturing measuring fixtures and gauges. After moving to Rochester (New York ,USA), ESD was purchased by some employees and renamed Optical Gaging Products, Inc. (OGP®) and Projection Gages, Inc. (PGI). OGP began a relationship with Eastman Kodak as the exclusive distributor for their Kodak Contour Projector®. In the years that followed, OGP grew rapidly to become one of the leading optical inspection companies in the U.S. In 1955, Edward C. Polidor, a founder of OGP, left the company to form Automation Gages, Inc. . Specializing in the manufacture of custom inspection equipment, a wide variety of automatic measuring machines were developed, e.g., for semiconductor wafers and for measuring the wear characteristics of textiles.

Automation Gages soon became the sole distributor of Bausch & Lomb's industrial laboratory equipment (including optical comparators and measuring microscopes) in the USA. When Kodak sold the Contour Projector product line in 1959, OGP moved its headquarters to Detroit and became part of the ex-Cell-O Corp.

With the goal of becoming the market leader, Automation Gage began an ambitious development program. As a result, between 1969 and 1973, General Measurement Research, Inc. (manufacturer of digital length measuring systems) , Visual Inspection Products (development and manufacture of optical gages and 1:1 pantographs ), the Ex-Cell-O and Bendix comparator series, and Optical Gaging Products, Inc. (OGP) were acquired. In 1973, all operations, including manufacturing, were consolidated under one roof in Rochester, New York.
